About Who we are what we do How we work. From children living with a disability, or young people with nowhere to call home, to people who need assistance into education or employment, we labor alongside them, so they can build a better future for themselves. Our social enterprise, C Cultural Consulting offers professional services in training, consulting, research and resource development to enable clients flourish their individual and organizational cultural intelligence. Our organization has adapted and changed over the years but what remains the equivalent is our goal to encourage people experiencing disadvantage, responding to their needs and the temporary needs of the communities we labor with. Here at Melbourne City Mission, we’re changing lives every day it’s our bread and butter. By working with us, you become portion of a diverse community services team of 850 staff, plus volunteers, all busy towards the identical vision. Best of all, we are unique we’re the only organization in Melbourne that offers services in all the subsequent areas: supporting people experiencing homelessness. About Who we are what we do How we work. We’ve been around since 1854, originally established by the Churches of Melbourne, and since then our organization has experienced extraordinary change. We have now grown to become a contemporary, nondenominational, community services organization, recognized for our leadership, diversity, innovation and inclusive approach. In the 1850s, boatloads of immigrants flooded into Melbourne seeking their fortune on the goldfields but maximum of them never made it out of the city. Many families broke up as the men headed for the goldfields, leaving their wives and children in Melbourne, living in appalling conditions. In fact, our Head Office building is located in this very area. Almost overnight a sprawling, decrepit neighborhood of canvas and mud sprang up. The area, which became known as Canvas Town, soon became a big slum, home to tens of thousands of migrants from around the world. These were rough and savage places, yet there was a sense of pride in the people there despite all the odds, life hadn’t beaten them. Government and private citizens same were totally unprepared for the sudden huge influx of people and the dreadful hardships they faced. Hester and Isabella went out daily to seek aid for the desperately needy, collecting money from the better off and rousing their conscience. Dr John, a medical practitioner, pharmacist and compassionate reformer, worked hard to influence correct thinking people to receive notice of the surrounding distress. He followed his Christian principles with John Wesley like fervor and evangelical zeal. Hester believed creating a City Mission along the lines she had seen in London, was the only way to get some organization into dealing with lost and impoverished people.
