MonashOakleigh Legal Service is a community legal center which provides release advice and assistance in relation to a range of areas of law to members of the community. The Mental Health Legal center is a twentytwoyearold statewide service providing legal assistance to users of mental health services (consumers). The Pro Bono Justice Project (Project) aims to address the alarmingly low smooth of legal representation for people subject to enforced psychiatric treatment in their hearings before the Mental Health Tribunal (the Tribunal). Specifically, the Project engages pro bono lawyers in private practice who are trained, supervised and supported by the center to represent involuntary patients in the Melbourne metropolitan region who are subject to Community Treatment Orders (coos). In any given year no more than 10 of Tribunal hearings involve legal representation on the part of the person whose rights are affected. The Mental Health Legal center is a specialist community legal center which provides a free and confidential legal service to anyone who has experienced mental illness in Victoria where their legal problem relates to their mental illness. To provide legal services of advice, representation, advocacy and referral to people having or labeled as having a psychiatric disability who otherwise would not have access to those services. To support with and for people with a psychiatric disability on policy and law reform issues, facilitating Consumer participation and basing center positions on Consumer views. An Involuntary Treatment Order (IMO), obliging a person to believe treatment for mental illness, can apply to both inpatients in hospital, or to people living in the community who are subject to a Community Treatment Order (CEO). Involuntary patients may also challenge their involuntary status by enchanting to the Tribunal at any time. Pro bono lawyers at all times act for and on behalf of the center and, once a matter is allocated, are essentially responsible for the client’s case. Currently, the center responds to individual requests for advocacy and effectively partners pro bono lawyers from special firms with hearings at those clinics where hearings are conducted on a exceptional day of the week. Interpreters are available over the phone or in person. During the evening service, interpreters are old over the phone. In person interpreters can be impaired during the day. The center is active in everyday work commitment to assist in eliminating violence and during this 16 Days of Activism participates in local campaigns, and facilitates an action meeting with CAD women. The center’s emphasis on access and empowerment is shown through its ongoing relationship with lengthy term volunteer Tomislav who participates on a weekly basis in contributing to the collective operations of the center.
